Measurement of turbulence profile from defocused ring images

ABSTRACT A defocused image of a bright single star in small telescope contains rich information on the optical turbulence, i.e. seeing. The concept novel turbulence monitor based recording sequences ring-like intrafocal images and their analysis is presented. It can be implemented using standard inexpensive telescopes cameras. Statistics intensity fluctuations rings radial motion allow measurement low-resolution profile, total seeing, atmospheric time-constant. algorithm processing extracting parameters developed extensively tested by numerical simulation. Prescriptions to correct for finite exposure time partially saturated scintillation are given. prototype instrument with 0.13-m aperture was sky. RINGSS (Ring-Image Next Generation Turbulence Sensor) used as portable site testing an upgrade existing seeing monitors.
